Linguistic Excursion: Blankets

The phrase “a blanket statement” relates to “the fabric of the cosmos” in that both refer to totality.  What is “covered” is completed—another term in the textile metaphor web that evokes totality. An irony is that “what is covered” can mean both what is made apparent (in the context of "covering topics") and what is hidden (when something is physically covered).
